About an hour north of downtown Houston, Lake Conroe offers weekend-getaway living every day. It's our current Neighborhood of the Month, so here's a closer look.
The lifestyle
- On the water: boating, fishing, paddleboarding and waterfront dining on roughly 20,000 acres of lake.
- In the woods: Sam Houston National Forest and the Lone Star Hiking Trail are next door, and W. Goodrich Jones State Forest is nearby.
- In town: historic downtown Conroe has shops, restaurants and live theater at the Crighton Theatre.
Schools and getting around
Homes around the lake are served mainly by Conroe ISD and Willis ISD, with some areas in Montgomery ISD — always confirm the zoned schools for a specific address. I-45 connects you to The Woodlands and Houston.
Homes you'll find
Everything from cozy resale cottages and lake-view homes to gated waterfront estates and golf-course communities, plus new master-planned communities nearby.
Buying on the lake: what to check
- Water access, bulkheads, boat lifts and docks — and any permits.
- Lake-level history and the property's elevation and flood history.
- Insurance costs, including flood coverage.
- HOA and deed restrictions, especially for short-term rentals.
